The Sleeping Giants- 'Volcanoes'
For the last four Billion years, since Earth bloomed into existence, Volcanoes have been constantly erupting furiously.
Volcanoes are openings where lava, small rocks, and steam erupt onto the Earth's surface. These can last days, months, or even years continuously. Today, Curiosity strikes me to to talk about volcanoes. These majestic yet incredibly deadly natural structures that protrude above the land are one of the most fascinating features that we are yet to fully understand.
Where here goes the process, ensure you don't get trapped by the heat of the flames 🔥;
molten rock called magma below the surface of the Earth rises in volcanic vents. Magma is made of molten rock, crystals, and dissolved gas—imagine an unopened bottle of soda with grains of sand inside. Cool isn't it 😅😎.
After cooling, liquid magma may form crystals of various minerals until it becomes completely solid and forms a magmatic rock, also termed a igneous rock.
[Still with us, Excellent....let's Continue]
Originating many tens of miles beneath the ground, magma is lighter than surrounding solid rock. It is driven towards Earth's surface by buoyancy, and by pressure from gas within it. Magma forces its way upward and may ultimately break though weak areas in the Earth's crust. If so, BOOM!! An eruption occurs.
- Fun Fact: There are about 1,350 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, not counting the volcanoes under the oceans.
Based on the image above, I task you to :
- construct your own cross-section of a Volcano.
- Compare your illustration the one above.
You can do this!👏👏😀

'The Sleeping Giant- Volcanoes'
To start the second edition of this thrilling blog, let's take a quick peek at this interesting clip about a volcano that recently awoke - Mauna Loa💥.
Enjoy!!
Absolutely jaw-dropping yet scary, the world's largest volcano roared into a fierce eruption after being dormant for almost 4 decades. Something to think about 🤔.
Here are some questions for you to ponder on and gather facts about.
- Name Three (3) volcanoes that have caused significant damage in the past during its eruption, but has been dormant since recently?
- What are some of the immediate signs of a volcano, as seen in the video above?
- Do you think volcanoes have any positive effects? if yes, why?
- Can a volcanic eruption be stopped? Give your reasoning.
Many of these volcanoes are located around the Pacific Ocean in what is known as the "Ring of Fire."
This is a belt-like rim of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean, as shown below.
In the U.S., volcanoes along the west coast and in Alaska are part of the Ring of Fire, while Yellowstone and Hawaiian volcanoes form over a "hot spot."
To make things more interesting, here is an activity called 'Make me Erupt', that will get you active:
- First, Draw a volcano with its crater on a large piece of white paper.
- Work together in groups of 3 to make the volcano look like it's erupting.
- You can add colored pieces of paper, cardboard scraps, ashes (torn newspaper), to get more creative with your work, etc.
This will be shared with everyone to decide which is the best!
Isn't that a fun activity that is relevant to the blog, it helps to solidify the layout of a volcano and how it looks.
Thanks for viewing and participating in my blog activities, it was fun.😃😃👏👏
